‘Sir-vana’ Returns? Dave Grohl Forms All-Star Band To Play Sundance – But Doesn’t Reveal Its Members

All a Foo Fighters hiatus means is that Dave Grohl can divert his creativity and powerful promotional muscle to a new project.

For the past five months the Foo fighters frontman has been successfully building hype for the debut of his directorial debut, the documentary Sound City, which tells the story of its namesake recording studio in Van Nuys, CA. After buying the studio’s famously custom-built analog recording console last year, Grohl had the idea to produce a film about its storied history. Bands such as (Grohl’s own) Nirvana, Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, Cheap Trick, Guns N’ Roses, Rage Against the Machine, Metallica, Nine Inch Nails and many more recorded there, using that very control board for the past 40 years.

The rock doc will premiere at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, UT. To celebrate its release, Grohl took to the film’s official Facebook page to announce the formation of the Sound City Players, a collaboration of musicians from the film’s soundtrack. Grohl exclaimed, “Hey guess what? Sound City Players. Rock Show. Jan. 18th Park City Live. Yup. That’s totally happening.”

The all-star group will take the stage at Park City Live for a performance by yet-to-be announced participants from the film. Although the band’s actual members have yet been announced, artists that contributed music to the film include Paul McCartney, Rick Springfield, Stevie Nicks, Nirvana’s Krist Novoselic, the Foo Fighters, Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age, Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk of Rage Against The Machine, and more. All Grohl needs are a few of these name to show to make it an incredible once-in-a-lifetime performance.

And could it be – are we in store for a reprisal of “Sir”-vana, the Paul McCartney-fronted reincarnation of Nirvana? The group made its debut at the 12-12-12 Concert last month for the premiere of new song “Cut Me Some Slack,” which serves as the first single from the Sound City soundtrack. The group then took on Saturday Night Live.
